Stillwater's Ryan Schoonover came through with a ninth-inning, two-out double to drop the Rogers County Rangers, 9-8, Wednesday night in an American Legion baseball game at Legion Field.

An error sandwiched by a pair of walks loaded the bases before Schoonover drilled a Kyle Stafford pitch down the left field line.

The base hit scored two runs. A third run was prevented when the runner was tagged out at home plate.

For the Rangers, 8-5, the home field defeat was the first since losing the season-opener.

A two-run Curt Simpson home run in the sixth inning put the Rangers on top, 8-5, in a contest in which they were out-hit by a 14-4 margin.

Spearheading the Stillwater hitting attack were Schoonover and Garrett Field. Each had four hits while teaming to drive in five runs.

Jared Shelton came on to pitch for Stillwater in sixth inning after Jeff Bradshaw and Steffon Williams reached base following Simpson's homer.

Shelton immediately ended the threat by getting the next batter on a fly ball to right field. In the final three innings, he retired nine of 10 batters, getting the final seven in a row.

Despite a stuttering offense, the Rangers kept the base paths busy in the first six innings. Eleven walks were issued by three Stillwater pitchers.

The two teams each were charged with five errors.

While Shelton earned the victory, Nathan Gilsleider suffered the setback. The third of four Ranger pitchers, he started the ninth and loaded the bases without giving up a hit. Stafford faced only one batter as he entered the contest with the bases loaded and two outs.

Matt York started for Rogers County and was charged with the first four Stillwater runs before giving way to Matt Sparks in the fifth. He gave up three runs before Gilsleider came in.

Held to only four hits, the Rangers made them count. In addition to Simpson, Josh Beal had a double and Bradshaw a single as each drove in two runs.

It’s back on the road for the Rangers, who play at Joplin Thursday night. Their next home game will be Tuesday against Caney, Kansas.
