The race is heating up.

Verdigris’ Rotnei Clarke, chasing the all-time Oklahoma career scoring record, unloaded 65 points Tuesday night to singlehandedly defeat Berryhill, 109-64, in a high school basketball game at Berryhill.

Already in third place with 3,364 points, Clarke inched closer to second place, and has his sights set on the record of 3,639.

Giving Clarke a run for the record is Pawnee’s Keiton Page. Page, who is in fourth place on the career charts, scored 43 points and has a total of 3,256. Page had scored 51 in a game last week, averaging 46 points for three games, as he tried to make up ground on Clarke.

Clarke and Page seemingly have been engaged in a silent game of one-upsmanship. Each has a chance to eclipse the record held by Ty Harman. And, each has kept his team on track for a state championship. Verdigris is Nol 1 in Class 3A and Pawnee is No. 1 in Class 2A.

While Page finished with 43, Clarke had 43 by halftime. Clarke finished with 20 of 33 field goals, including 10 of 13 from 3-point range, and 15 of 18 free throws.

It was a career high for the four-year starter, and eclipsed the mark of 60 that he scored in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament last year.

The 6-foot Clarke, who played all but three minutes, also pulled in 11 rebounds.

Clarke and the Cardinals have a date at Sperry Friday night, and close the regular season at home Monday night against Claremore Sequoyah.

In the girls game, Cassie Clarke scored 35 points and gathered 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 70-49 victory. Teammate Julia Mitchell added eight points and nine rebounds.
