AUSTIN, Texas – The Rogers State men's soccer team fell, 4-2, at No. 11-ranked St. Edward's on Thursday (Sept. 28) at Lewis-Chen Field.

The Hillcats (5-3-1, 2-2-1 Heartland Conference) evened the score twice after goals from the No. 11-ranked Hilltoppers (8-1, 5-0 Heartland), but SEU followed with tallies minutes after to regain the lead each time.

SEU put in the first goal of the game in the 24th minute on a deflection by John-Mathew Tofey after touches by Owain Hoskins and Dylan Armstrong.

The navy and red equalized when Jeremy Hoelzer hit a ball to the upper 90 to the right side for a 1-1 score in the 38th minute. Jordan Watson picked up the assist on the Hoelzer goal.

It took the Hilltoppers just over one minute to retake the edge in the game. After a hand ball in the box by RSU, Pablo Covarrubias of SEU converted on a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute.

In the second half, Jake Simpson pulled the Cats even with the Hilltoppers in the 67th minute with a goal off a corner kick for a 2-2 score. Assists were earned by Pedro Garcia and Declan Fitzpatrick on the tally.

SEU once again responded fast with a goal about one minute later for a 3-2 advantage in the 68th minute. A cross sent in by the Hilltoppers was deflected by an RSU defender and into the goal for the unusual game-winning score. SEU added an insurance goal in the 90th minute for the final 4-2 margin.

After the Hilltoppers held a 13-2 edge in shots in the first half, the navy and red finished with a slight 8-7 advantage in the second half. For the game, SEU posted a 20-10 lead in shots, including 7-4 in shots on goal. Simpson paced the Cats with a game-high three shots.

Cody Gammill went the full 90 minutes in goal and totaled three saves.
