CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's soccer team defeated preseason No. 3-ranked Rockhurst by a score of 2-0 on Saturday (Sept. 8) night at Soldier Field.
RSU (2-2) added another signature win at Soldier Field as the Hawks were ranked No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25 poll after advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament semifinals in 2017.
Senior captain Jake Simpson scored the game-winning goal and put the navy and red up 1-0 midway through the first half, and freshman Cairo Allen added an insurance goal in the second half for the 2-0 victory over RU.
Simpson tallied his first goal of the season on a laser shot to the upper right corner of the goal in the 26th minute of the contest to give RSU a 1-0 lead.
Allen doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 71st minute of action when he knocked in a loose ball in the box after a free kick from the Hillcats.
RSU had other opportunities to add to its goal total, including when senior Abe Young saw his header knock off the crossbar early in the first half when the game was still scoreless.
Dillon Dean and the RSU defense kept the high powered Rockhurst team scoreless. The Hawks totaled nearly two goals a game a season ago, but Dean made six huge saves to preserve the shutout win, his second clean sheet of the season.
The nonconference clash was a physical contest throughout the 90 minutes with a combined 36 fouls committed between the two teams along with six yellow cards.
The Hawks finished with a 17-6 edge in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hillcats' six shots came from six different players.
RSU starts Heartland Conference play with four straight road games. The stretch opens at No. 2 Midwestern State on Sept. 13 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
