LAREDO, Texas – Freshman forward Hannah Mushisky tallied two goals to lift the Rogers State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Texas A&M International on Thursday night at Dustdevil Field.
With the win, the Hillcats moved their unbeaten streak to five straight, and improved to 11-3-1 overall. With three points in the conference standings, the navy and red stayed in second with 22 points and a 7-3-1 record.
Mushisky, the Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, scored in each period to post eight for the season and rank second on the team. She tallied the game-winning goal in the 29th minute when she headed in a cross from Madison Murray, who earned her team-leading fifth assist, for a 1-0 advantage.
The freshman added the insurance goal in the 65th minute on a tap in after a ball into the box from Janell Hernandez for a 2-0 score.
The Hillcats had other chances in the contest. Daisy Cardona had an attempt to the far post saved in the sixth minute, and Murray hit the crossbar in the ninth minute.
RSU held a 19-10 edge in shots for the 90 minutes, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Pushing forward, the Hillcats totaled four corner kicks and kept the Dustdevils from any corner kick attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Sargent, the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, picked up the shutout victory on goal. The shutout was Sargent's eighth of the season and set a new RSU single season record. She finished with three saves and moved to 11-3-1 on the season.
The Hillcats continue their four-game road trip to end the season at St. Mary's on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
