DURANGO, Colo. — Jess Whitting ranks in the top three after the first round and the Rogers State women's golf team sits in nine after day one of the Skyhawk West Regional Preview on Monday (Sept 18) at Hillcrest Golf Club.
Whitting fired a first round score of 1-over-par 72 to sit in a tie for third place. The Perth, Australia native started on the fourth hole and totaled two birdies on the first six holes. After two bogeys in three holes, Whitting responded with two birdie 3s on No. 14 and 16 to stay even though 13 holes. She moved up into the top three with a closing birdie on the 506-yard par 5 third. For her round, Whitting posted five birdies, the most in the field in the first round.
As a team, the Hillcats rank ninth overall with a total score of 308. After Whitting for the Hillcats was Alex Massie with a 6-over-par score of 77 for 31st overall. Playing in her first round in the navy and red, Massie tallied 12 pars and six bogeys for the 6-over-par score.
Sophomore Sydney Murray put together a round of 8-over-par 79 to rank 55th overall and third for RSU. She totaled one birdie on the 516-yard par 5 No. 10. She started the front nine with four straight pars before ending her round with two bogeys on No. 5 and 6.
Finishing one shot behind Murray was fellow sophomore Mariana Flores with her round of 9-over-par 80. Flores started strong as she was 1-over-par through 10 holes.
She got to 1-over-par after back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and 15, two par 4s. Her round was derailed by two consecutive double bogeys, but she responded with birdie on the 506-yard par-5 third hole. For her round, Flores registered three birdies, ranking sixth in the field.
Senior Mica Eastin finished her round with a 10-over-par score of 81. She ranks 68th in the field after the one round. For her round, the senior totaled eight bogeys and one double for the 10-over-par score.
Dallas Baptist University leads the field by 15 shots after a first round total of 285. The Patriots placed three golfers in the top three with Addison Mitchell currently in front at 2-under-par 69.
The final round set for 10 a.m. tomorrow with a shotgun start. The Hillcats will start on holes eight through 11. Playing in foursomes, the navy and red will be with Texas A&M-Commerce, Cal State Monterey Bay and Academy of Art in their groups.
