RSU’s Sydney Murray is 14th overall after one round at the Midwestern State Invitational.


WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State women's golf team ranks in second after the first round of the Midwestern State Invitational on Monday (March 12) with a team score of 313 at the Wichita Falls Country Club. Three Hillcats sit in the top 14 after one round with Jess Whitting in second and Mica Easin in ninth.

Whitting, who won the St. Edward's Invitational in RSU's last tournament, started the MSU Invite with a 2-over-par 74 in today's opening round on the 5,843-yard, par-72 course. The Perth, Australia native posted three birdies and five bogeys in the round. Whitting is tied with two other golfers for second and sits only one shot back from Abigail Rigsby of Oklahoma Christian who finished at 1-over-par 73.

Eastin, who won this tournament a season ago, carded a first round score of 6-over-par 78 to place ninth overall after the first day. She finished with two birdies, both on par 4s, and eight bogeys for the 6-over-par score.

Sophomore Sydney Murray shot a 7-over-par 79 to start the invitational on Monday to rank in 14th overall and only one shot back of Eastin. Murray tallied two birdies on the back nine and totaled nine bogeys to post the 79 in the first round.

Mariana Flores and Veronica Grey each registered rounds of 10-over-par 82s in the opening round. Flores was at 3-over-par after the first nine, including one birdie, but closed with a back nine of 7-over-par for the total score of 82. Grey shot back-to-back 41s on the front and back nines for her 82 that included one birdie in No. 16, a 314-yard par 4.

The Hillcats are only two shots back of Arkansas Tech in a field of 19 teams. The Golden Suns tallied a score of 311 to be two shots up on the navy and red.

The final round is set for 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Cats will open on holes 1-3 with live scoring once again available.
