CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team opened the 2017 Heartland Conference schedule with a 2-0 win over Newman on Thursday (Sept. 8) at Soldier Field. With the win, the Hillcats moved to 3-0 on the season, their best start since 2010.

After a scoreless first half, the navy and red totaled two goals in less than 7 minutes to gain a 2-0 advantage midway through the second half. Daisy Cardona totaled her second goal in three games with a header that beat the goalkeeper to the far post for a 1-0 advantage in the 59th minute. Melissa Cardeneas earned the assist on the goal. The lead doubled in the 66th minute when Hannah Muskisky knocked in the ball right in front of the goalkeeper. BreAnn Tolleson picked up the assist on the second goal.

After a fairly even first half, the Hillcats wore out the Jets team, which only played two subs for most of the contest. RSU used 20 student-athletes during the course of the game and slowly took control of the play of the game. In the second half, RSU held a 7-2 advantage in shots and for the game led 14-8 in the category.

The Hillcat defense posted their third shutout in three games. Dating back to the 2016 season, RSU hasn't allowed a goal in 331 minutes, including 270 minutes this season.

Junior Taylor Sargent started in goal, going the full 90s. She registered five saves in 90 minutes of action. The five saves are the most saves in her short career in the navy and red.
