CLAREMORE — Class 5A 10th-ranked Claremore beat Tulsa Edison in three sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) Tuesday on senior night in Claremore.
The Zebras (20-16) close the regular season Thursday at Lincoln Christian and then will be at Coweta on Monday for the regional playoffs.
The other two teams in the regional, in addition to the host Tigers, are Tulsa Memorial and McAlester.
Claremore had a trio of seniors honored in players Lauren Hardage and Taylor McGarrah as well as team manager Keysha Johnson.
The Eagles (8-15) got the opening point of the match, but the Zebras answered with a 6-0 run and never trailed for the remainder of the first set.
Briley Penny had strong serving to key that early spurt. Madison Dugan was solid late in the set with some nice serving. The set ended on a kill from Riley Renfroe.
Claremore never trailed in the second set and there was only one tie at 2-2. The Zebras took control from there with seven consecutive points.
Penny came up with solid serving once again to key that surge. Edison battled back though and got as close as 11-9 at one point.
Claremore answered with a 6-0 run and then pulled away steadily. Dani Meisinger and McGarrah both served well late in the set.
The third set also look liked it would be a comfortable margin for the Zebras as built an early 7-1 advantage. The Eagles fought back though and eventually scored six straight points to go ahead 10-8.
Edison was up 15-13, but Claremore countered with a 5-0 run thanks to solid overall play. Renfroe eventually finished things off with a winner on match point.
