The Claremore Sequoyah Lady Eagles turned up the defensive pressure Thursday night and dropped Inola, 44-28, in the opening round of the Class 4A high school basketball regional tournament at Jay.

Sequoyah advances to the regional finals Saturday night at Vinita, where the Lady Eagles will take on the undefeated Vinita Lady Hornets.

Sequoyah, defeating Inola for the second time in three meetings, received a season-high 21 points from Stevey Conger.

“She carried us,” Sequoyah coach Russell Morgan said.

Also at Jay, the Inola Longhorns won their regional opener, defeating Jay, 62-48, and advance to Saturday’s final against Vinita’s undefeated boys, at Vinita.

The Sequoyah girls and Inola were tied through most of the first half until Conger hit a bucket to propel the Lady Eagles to a 16-13 intermission lead.

In the third quarter, with the score tied, Conger again put the Lady Eagles ahead and pushed them into the fourth quarter on top, 24-18.

She scored eight points in the final quarter to put the game away.

“She was fantastic,” Morgan said. “She sparked us the whole game.”

So did Megan Fuller, he said.

The junior post player did more defensively than she did on the offensive end.

She blocked four shots and grabbed 10 rebounds, Morgan said, to go along with her eight points. She helped shut down the Inola inside game, limiting 6-1 Kelsey Sears to six points.

“Having Megan in the middle, as athletic as she is, is a big advantage for us,” Morgan said. “She did a fantastic job down low, taking away their drives and defending their post player.”

Clyde Barkley, Inola boys coach, was pleased with his balanced scoring, putting four players in double figures.

Eric Feemster had his season’s best game, Barkley said, collecting 14 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Leading scorer Jared Cotton had 18 points and nine rebounds.

As a team, Inola made 30 of 40 free throws. Although Aaron Weaver did not score, he handed out seven assists.
