CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team took control early and never looked back in a dominating 2-0 win over Oklahoma Christian
on Thursday night (Sept. 28) at Soldier Field.
The Hillcats (7-2, 4-2 Heartland Conference) needed only six minutes to gain a 1-0 advantage on the visiting Eagles. Senior Daisy Cardona put the Cats up 1-0 on a header to the far post on a cross from Maggie Brown for the early edge in the sixth minute. The tally was Cardona's team-leading sixth of the season and her fourth game winner.
RSU doubled the lead to 2-0 in the first half when freshman Hannah Mushisky knocked in a rebounded shot from Janell Hernandez. The attempt from Hernandez deflected across the goal and right to Mushisky who slotted it home.
The navy and red dictated play throughout the 90 minutes and registered a 24-8 edge in shots. In the first 45 minutes, the Cats held a 14-3 advantage in shots. RSU didn't match the shot total in the second half as the Eagles played a higher back line to force more offside calls.
The Cats were whistled offsides 10 times in the contest.
For the game, RSU posted 13 shots on goal and also hit the post and crossbar. A total of 12 Hillcats posted shots with Melissa Cardenas registering a game-high four, all on goal.
Taylor Sargent started in goal and earned the shutout victory. She totaled five saves to move to 7-2 on the season with six shutout wins.
With the win, the Hillcats surpassed their win total from last season in only nine games so far this season. The seven victories are the most for the Hillcats since 2012 when RSU finished 12-3-3.
The Hillcats welcome Lubbock Christian to Soldier Field on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m. Coverage will be available on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
