A busy summer of baseball at Legion Field opened Monday night as Claremore’s two entries in the new Diamond League program split a pair of games.

Claremore's Red Team stopped Mannford, 5-1, after Claremore White lost to Broken Arrow, 7-5.

Both local clubs are composed of athletes who will be playing for Claremore High School next year. Players are age 17 and under.

Against Mannford, Red starting pitcher Josh Jennings was nearly untouchable, striking out seven in three-plus innings. He retired 10 of the 13 he faced, giving up only two singles and a walk.

Phillip Cerrito, Jennings' catching mate, drove in two first-inning runs with a double over the left fielder. He then scored on a Hunter Hines single.

This proved to be enough, but Claremore added unearned runs in the third and fourth innings. Hines scored in the third as the Pirate catcher overthrew third base as Hines was stealing it.

Curtis Coyle walked with two out in the fourth, stole second and third on the next two pitches, then casually trotted home as a balk was called on the Mannford pitcher.

Jimmy Williams replaced Jennings with one out in the fourth. He hit Steve Hilgendorf with a pitch to start the fifth and this led to Mannford's lone run. Hilgendorf scored when Marty Smith singled with two outs.

Williams then ended the contest as he fielded a weak bouncer off the bat of pinch hitter Jerry Hampton.

Both games Monday night were five-inning affairs due to the one-hour, 45-minute time limit imposed by the league.

Maybe it was first-game jitters, but four first-inning errors put Claremore White in a two-run hole in the opening contest.

Claremore fought back to take a 4-2 edge and was on top, 5-4, after the third.

It didn't hold.

A two-out error in the top of the fifth allowed three Broken Arrow runs to follow.

Claremore White actually out-hit Broken Arrow, 8-4, but six fielding miscues were too much to overcome.

The two Monday games were the first of more than 50 games scheduled for the Claremore field this summer. This does not include tournament games.

Two games are scheduled Wednesday night. Tulsa Memorial will bring two teams to town, facing Claremore White at 6 p.m., and Claremore Red at 8 p.m.
