Needing a win to stay in the District 2A-7 high school football playoff race, Verdigris delivered with a 40-6 handling of Chouteau Thursday night.

Quarterback Aaron Sunday led the Cardinals to 421 yards of total offense completing 11 of19 for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Sunday also scored on a five-yard run in the third.

“We started off really slow, and I wasn’t too happy with our play, but we had some kids coming off injuries,” Verdigris coach Dan Nickles said.

D.J. Sam caught eight passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Kevin Stout only had four catches, but managed 136 yards and three touchdowns, for an average of 34 yards per catch.

The Wildcast had only five first downs and 132 yards of total offense.

“We played well on defense, except that one scoring series,” Nickles said.
