Quarterback Aaron Sunday is keeping the Verdigris Cardinals in the playoff picture.

He took control of the situation Thursday night and carried the Cardinals to a 40-6 victory over Chouteau.

The 6-2, 200-pound junior threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. He completed 11 of 19 passes for 259 yards, connecting with Kevin Stout three times (for 33, 44 and 38 yards) and finding A.J. Fultz once (25 yards).

For his strong-armed tactics, Sunday has earned the Claremore Progress salute as Rogers County high school football Player of the Week.

Sunday proved his versatility by running five yards for a touchdown in the third period.

After back-to-back losses to ranked teams, Verdigris needed a win to keep its post-season hopes alive in District 2A-7. Sunday delivered.

With the win, Verdigris is tied with Pawhuska and Nowata at 3-2 in the district, behind Cascia Hall (5-0) and Sperry (4-1). Verdigris has beaten Nowata, and faces Pawhuska in the season finale.
