WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State women's golf team dropped down to fifth as a team out of 19 teams at the Midwestern State Invitational with a final round score of 321 for a two-round score of 634 (+58) at Wichita Falls CC. The Hillcats were only four shots back from second place, where they started today.
Jess Whitting posted her second consecutive top-five finish and her fourth top five this season, placing fourth at 11-over-par 155 after the two rounds. In the final round today, the Perth, Australia native shot a 9-over-par 81. After going 9-over on the first 10 holes, Whitting got back on track with two birdies in the final stretch and totaled two bogeys. The redshirt freshman opened with a 2-over-par 74 in yesterday's opening round with three birdies. For the tournament, she tallied five birdies, ranking second in the field of 98 golfers.
Senior Mica Eastin finished in 14th place with a 36-hole total score of 14-over-par 158. She shot a final round score of 8-over-par 80 in today's round. The Carrollton, Texas native ended strong at 2-over-par on the back nine and was even on the back until a late double bogey. Eastin registered one birdie today in No. 16 and added two yesterday in her first round of 6-over-par 78 for three birdies in the two days.
Sophomore Sydney Murray stayed in the top 20 at 17th overall with her final score of 15-over-par 159. The Kansan matched Eastin with a second round score of 8-over-par 80 today as she totaled nine bogeys and one birdie on No. 15, a par 5. She topped the field in par 5 scoring at even par through the two rounds. The sophomore opened the tournament yesterday with a score of 7-over-par 79 for the 36-hole total.
Freshman Veronica Grey moved up nine spots in the final round today to place 29th with a total score of 18-over-par 162. Like her Hillcat teammates Murray and Eastin, Grey carded a final round score of 8-over-par 80. She was 6-over-par after nine holes and then tallied back-to-back birdies in No. 12 and 13 to get to 4-over-par. Two late double bogeys dropped her back to 8-over-par and she ended with three straight pars for the 8-over-par 80 score. In the first round, the freshman shot a 10-over-par 82. Grey registered four birdies in the two rounds, ranking fifth in the field.
Mariana Flores totaled a score of 166 with rounds of 82 and 84 in today's final round. The sophomore finished in 47th overall.
Arkansas Tech won the team title with a score of 624. Midwestern State moved up one spot for second at 630.
Abigail Rigsby of Oklahoma Christian took individual medalist honors at 5-over-par 149, winning by four shots. Peerada Piddon of ATU was second at 9-over-par 153.
