FORT SILL, Okla. – Jess Whitting finished in second place, and the Rogers State women's golf team moved up to fifth in a field of 12 teams with the second-best round in school history today (Oct. 17) in the final round of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate at Fort Sill Golf Course. The Hillcats posted a score of 293 in today's second round to total a score of 595 in the tournament.
Whitting, a redshirt freshman from Perth, Australia, put together the best final round of the tournament at 2-under-par 70 to jump up six places to second on the leaderboard. Her final round was one stroke off the school record of 69 set by teammate Mica Eastin. The 2-under-par score was one shot better than Whitting's first round score of 1-under-par 71. For the 36 holes, the Perth, Australia native fired a score of 3-under-par 141 to earn all-tournament honors. Whitting finished with seven birdies and 25 pars in the two rounds.
Senior Mica Eastin placed in the top 20 as she posted a score of 5-over-par 149 in the event. In the final round today, Eastin totaled a score of 2-over-par 74 to move up six spots from yesterday. The senior carded a round of 3-over-par 75 in the first round on Monday. Eastin took advantage of the par fives, finishing second in the field in par-five scoring at 3-under-par. She tallied five birdies in the two rounds at the tournament.
Junior Alex Massie ended the tournament with a score of 5-over-par 77 in today's final round. The Lubbock, Texas native carded a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round. For the tournament, Massie posted a total score of 7-over-par 151 to rank 29th. For the event, she registered 24 pars to rank toward the top of the field.
Sophomore Sydney Murray was one of the biggest movers on the leaderboard as she climbed 19 spots in the standings with her final round of 1-over-par 73. The Wichita, Kan. native carded a 36-hole score of 11-over-par 155 for 37th place after a 10-over-par 82 in the first round on Monday.
Sophomore Mariana Flores also rose up the standings with her final round score of 4-over-par 76. Paired with her first round total of 10-over-par 82, Flores finished at 14-over-par 158 to move up 11 spots to 45th overall.
The 36-hole total of 595 was one shot off the school record of 594 set at the 2016 Oklahoma Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-18, 2016. The 18-hole score of 293 in today's second round was two shots off the team low round of 291 from Sept. 16, 2014 at the Susie Maxwell Classic.
Midwestern State won the team title with a 36-hole score of 577 (+1) to win by seven shots over Tarleton State. MSU's Emily Brennan took the individual title at 6-under-par 138.
