RSU’s Jess Whitting finished in fourth place at the NSU Golf Classic, leading the Hillcats to a seventh place finish.


TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – In her first collegiate tournament, Jess Whitting placed fourth overall and the Rogers State women's golf team finished in seventh at the 19th Annual Northeastern State Golf Classic on Monday and Tuesday at Cherokee Springs Golf Course.

The Hillcats posted the third-best round in the second round at 308. Paired with the first round score of 313, the navy and red registered a team score of 621.

Whitting put together one of the best second rounds in the field at 2-over-par 74. She totaled two birdies and four bogeys for the 74 score. After a bogey on the third hole, Perth, Australia native responded with a birdie two on the par 3, 127-yard fourth hole. Her second birdie of the day came on No. 15, a 322-yard par 4. With her 5-over-par 77 on the first day, Whitting totaled a score of 7-over-par 151 to tie for fourth place and to finish on the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Sydney Murray ended in 15th place overall. She shot a final round score of 4-over-par 76 to go with her first round score of 6-over-par 78 for a total score of 10-over-par 154. After a bogey start, Murray birdied the second hold, a 467-yard par 5, and was 1-over-par through the first 14 holes. The sophomore concluded her round with three bogeys in the final four holes for the 4-over-par score.

Sophomore Mariana Flores carded a final round score of 7-over-par 79 to tally a two-round score of 13-over-par 157 for 17th overall. She birdied the third hole, a 348-yard par 4, and was 1-over-par through eight holes. After going 6-over-par in a six-hole stretch, Flores finished the final round with four straight pars for the 7-over-par 79. In the first round yesterday, she posted a 6-over-par score of 78.

Senior Mica Eastin matched Flores in the final round with a 7-over-par 79 in today's round. The senior started her day with a birdie on the second hole, a 467-yard par 5. She had four bogeys to end the front nine for a score of 4-over-par 40. Eastin closed with a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine that included a birdie on the 297-yard, par-4 16th hole. She tallied a 36-hole score of 15-over-par 159 to place 28th overall.

Freshman Veronica Grey closed her first tournament with a 10-over-par 82 in today's final round. She birdied No. 10, a 507-yard par 5, and was 1-under-par in the first six holes of the back nine. She ended the round by going 5-over-par in the final three holes for the score of 82. Grey shot a score of 81 in the first round for a total score of 163 in her first collegiate event.

Southwestern Oklahoma State claimed the team championship after winning a tiebreaker. SWOSU, Henderson State and Missouri Western tied for first in the team score after the two rounds at 614.

MWSU's Shi Qing Ong won the individual title by five shots at 1-under-par 143. She shot a 1-under-par 71 today in the final round.

The Hillcats are back in action next Monday (Sept. 18) at the Skyhawk Women's Fall Regional Preview in Durango, Colo. at Hillcrest Golf Course.
