VERDIGRIS — Verdigris senior guard Caitlyn Hanslovan drained two key 3-pointers during Saturday’s Class 3A Regional Finals that provided a spark and a huge win over Vian.

Hanslovan, who is accustomed to winning state championships in soccer, will look to move the No. 3-ranked Lady Cardinals one step closer toward a berth in the 3A State Tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the area finals against Tahlequah Sequoyah at Checotah High School.

A win over Tahlequah Sequoyah and the Lady Cardinals are back in the state tournament for the third-straight year under head coach Mike Buntin.

The key to the Lady Cardinals’ success this season has fallen on the shoulders of senior point guard Baileigh O’Dell, who is three points away from becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer.

O’Dell tallied 23 points in the Lady Cardinals’ win over Vian, and more importantly, has provided the motivation and determination to keep this team focused on the ultimate goal — winning the 3A state championship.

In the boys’ area championship, the No. 4-ranked Cardinals will also tangle with Tahlequah Sequoyah at 8 p.m. on Friday at Checotah High School.

A win over Tahlequah Sequoyah and the Cardinals are back in the state tournament under veteran coach Randy Upshaw.
