TULSA — The Rogers State women’s basketball team opened the season with an 88-50 exhibition loss at The University of Tulsa inside the Reynolds Center on Wednesday night.

The Hillcats struggled to knock off the rust in the opening half as they committed 17 turnovers and managed just 19 points. RSU shot just 22 percent from the field in the first stanza while the Golden Hurricane converted 48 percent of their shots. TU scored the first five points before RSU sophomore Larrielle Giles answered with a layup and a conventional three-point play to knot the game 5-5. The Hurricane followed with a 15-2 run to give them a 13-point lead and never relinquished the advantage. TU took a 41-19 lead into the lock room at the break.

RSU came out with a spark in the second 20 minutes as Ariani Silva knocked down a trey from the left elbow to open the half. Logan Froese followed with a layup off an inbounds play and Rician Walker registered a steal, followed by a bucket to complete a six-point run. TU countered with 11 unanswered points to lead by 26, keeping the Hillcats without a rhythm.

Senior Leah Smith was the lone Hillcat to reach double figures, scoring 14 points.  Silva tallied eight points, converting 2-of-3 from behind the arc. RSU improved its shooting percentage from the floor in the second half, shooting 41 percent.  The Cats committed 32 turnovers while the Hurricane gave away the ball 22 times in the contest. TU edged the Cats on the glass, 35-34.

Rogers State returns to action on Sunday with its final exhibition game of the season against the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live and RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
