No. 15 Hillcats sweep series from Wayland Baptist

CLAREMORE — No. 15 Rogers State swept Saturday’s doubleheader and in doing so swept the regular season series versus Wayland Baptist at the Diamond Sports Complex.



A walk-off in the bottom of the seventh in game one gave RSU the 3-2 victory over the Pioneers. In the nightcap the Diamond Cats strung together 11 runs on 18 hits to claim the 11-4 victory.



GAME ONE



RSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Colton Campbell scored on a double steal.



The Pioneers tallied runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings forcing the Hillcats to the home half of the seventh needing to rally.



The Cardiac Cats struck again this time starting with a two out walk by Hector Rivera. Jose Olazagasti reached on an error by the WBU third baseman putting Jean Francois Dumais-Fyfe at second as he pinch ran for Rivera.



With two on and two outs the Cats turned to senior Colton Campbell and the St. Cloud, Fla. native answered with a two-RBI double over the centerfielder’s head to deep center.



The victory went to senior Brandon Bargas (7-3) in the complete game on the mound as he allowed two runs, one earned, and fanned five batters.



Ryan Downs (2-5) received the loss for the Pioneers as he gave up three runs, one earned.



GAME TWO



The Hillcats came firing out of the gates in the first inning of game two as Eric Baker led off with a double to deep left. A Tyler Wheeler single scored Baker and moved Colton Campbell to third. A passed ball scored Campbell and a single by Ramcy Lora plated Wheeler as RSU led 3-0 after one inning of action.



The Cats gave up a pair of runs in the top of the third before plating two runs of its own in the home half of the inning. The Pioneers scored a run in the visitor’s half of the fourth before RSU put up four runs in the bottom of the inning.



A lead off error followed by a Baker singled put runners on first and second for the Cats. Rivera’s sacrifice bunt advanced Bargas and Baker to scoring position and Olazagasti plated the pair with a single up the middle. A single to center by Colton Campbell scored Rivera putting RSU up 8-3. The Diamond Cats weren’t finished in the fourth as Lora’s looping single to left scored Olazagasti as coach Ron Bradley’s squad led 9-3.



RSU added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning before allowing a run to the Pioneers in the top of the seventh.



Jesse Baird struck out five in the no decision start for the Hillcats as the junior pitched 3.2 innings. Jesus Del Rosario (4-1) earned the victory in relief for the Cats as he fanned four. Mason Marquette closed the game pitching one inning as he allowed just one earned run on one hit.



Tyler Doolittle (1-1) received the loss in the start for the Pioneers pitching 2.2 innings giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Wayland Baptist (16-28, 8-11) went to the bullpen calling upon three pitchers, all of whom pitched one inning of action, combining to give up six runs on 10 hits.



Senior Colton Campbell combined to go 5-for-7 on the day with five RBI while Eric Baker returned to action to go 2-for-3 as the Hillcats leadoff hitter. Ramcy Lora went 3-for-4 in game two and Jose Olazagasti totaled three RBI on three hits in the nightcap.



Rogers State (29-12, 14-6) returns to action on Monday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Diamond Sports Complex versus Bacone College. RSU Radio 91.3FM and the Hillcat Network will provide live coverage of the nine-inning contest.
