BASEBALL: LCU clinch series sweep over Hillcats

CLAREMORE — The Rogers State baseball team fell, 12-2, in the Heartland Conference series finale against No. 18 Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.

In the second, the Chaparrals tallied three hits, including an RBI single to left field by Ethan Kohnle, to plate the first run of the contest.

LCU used a two-out rally in the third to increase its advantage. With runners on first and second, Wigberto Nevarez belted a two-out RBI single up the middle. Hunter McFall kept the inning going with a RBI single to right giving the Chaps a 3-0 lead.

The Hillcats threatened in the bottom of the third with two outs, but left runners stranded on second and third.

In the fourth frame, RSU committed a costly two-out error on a routine ground ball that scored a pair of runs, pushing the Chaps lead to 5-0.  Brandon Wilson made it a 7-0 game in the sixth with a two-run double down the right field line and Brett Kauten added a run in the seventh with a RBI single to right field.

RSU dented the scoreboard in the seventh with a two out rally. Chase Knott started the offense with a double down the left field line and Caleb Kohlmeyer followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Blake Gipson reached on a ball-four wild pitch that also sent Knott across home plate.  Ryan Hendricks followed with a RBI double down the left field like to cut the deficit to 8-2.

The Chaps sealed the short-game victory in the eighth, plating four runs on five hits. Jack Mabe tallied the win for LCU, allowing four hits with six strikeouts.

Jesse Baird was tagged with the loss for RSU, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Rogers State (13-20, 6-15 HC) will return to action Tuesday as the Hillcats host Southern Nazarene at the Diamond Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at
