No. 7 OBU captures SAC Volleyball Championship

SHAWNEE — No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist took down No. 19 Wayland Baptist in four sets (30-28, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17) to win the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship Saturday afternoon at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla.

It is the third consecutive SAC Championship for the Lady Bison, who finished the regular season undefeated in conference play for the third straight year as well.

OBU took a hard-fought first set that featured 17 ties. The Lady Bison never trailed, but WBU kept hanging around, never trailing by more than five.

The second set was also tight throughout, as OBU never lead by more than four on the way to a 2-0 advantage over WBU.

The trend continued into the third, which saw 23 ties and three lead changes. Neither team was ahead by more than four throughout the set, as the Pioneers took the set and trailed just 2-1 heading to the fourth.

OBU jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, leading 9-7. The Lady Bison then used a 13-5 run to take a 10 point advantage. OBU would win the set by eight points and with it claim another SAC Championship.

The Lady Bison were led by a pair of All-SAC Tournament players in the championship match.

Senior outside hitter Kristin Pressley had a match-high 19 kills and 21 digs to go along with four blocking assists and an ace. She was named the SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player following the match.

Alexandra Rokas was also named to the all-tournament team, and finished with 12 kills and one dig while accumulating a .476 hitting percentage for the match.

Junior setter Aysegul Guney had 31 assists, seven digs and three kills in the winning effort.

The Pioneers were led by sophomore outside hitter Shahala Hawkins, who collected 14 kills, four digs, a solo block and a blocking assist. Her performance this weekend earned her All-SAC Tournament honors.

Grecia Rivera recorded 12 kills, a blocking assist, and a match-high 21 digs for WBU as she joined Hawkins on the all-conference tournament team.

With the win OBU receives an automatic bid to the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

Claremore sophomore forward Brylee Brasher may have felt a little out of position Monday night during the junior varsity game against Verdigris.
Normally, starting in the goal for the Lady Zebras varsity team, Brasher came out of her comfort zone to start at forward for the Claremore JV.
The position switch proved to be a great decision for head coach Robin Sutherland, as Brasher showed a tenacity on offense that led to Claremore’s 2-1 win over Verdigris.

Finally, the NBA playoffs are set.
It took the entire season to fill out those brackets.
Overtime thrillers in Memphis and Charlotte, a go-ahead dunk in Oklahoma City to win a game and cap another scoring title for Kevin Durant, plus some good old-fashioned disinterest by Brooklyn ... all that, and more, on the final night of the season was needed before the eight conference-quarterfinal matchups in this season's NBA playoffs could be decided.
