BATON ROUGE, La. —
The Tulsa softball team closed out the season-opening Tiger Classic with a 5-0 defeat to Purdue Sunday morning at Tiger Park.
The Golden Hurricane completed a 3-2 weekend in which it earned wins over No. 22 North Carolina (3-1), Purdue (4-1) and Hampton (3-0), and fell to No. 10 LSU (1-0) in 10 innings, and Purdue on Sunday.
"It was a good weekend overall, but we probably feel a little down today, because we didn't play up to the level of our first four games," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "Our pitching was really outstanding all weekend. We had four outstanding outings from Lacey Middlebrooks and Aimee Creger. For her first start, Caitlin Sill did a great job of missing the barrel of the bat for the most part. I was really impressed with how Lacey and Aimee came out and threw the first weekend of the season. Hits were awfully hard to come by. It's a good omen for the rest of the season if they can pitch like they did this weekend.
"We played 37 innings on defense, and all but two innings were outstanding innings. When you think about the weekend, we played a lot of pressure situations in a lot of innings against as good competition as we played, and 35 of 37 innings ranged from very good to spectacular defensively."
Junior third baseman Jill Barrett and junior right fielder Haley Henshaw were named to the Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team. Barrett went 6-for-15 (.400) with three runs scored, and had a hit in each game, and Henshaw was 5-for-14 (.357) with four RBI in the tournament.
Tulsa had four hits on Sunday, and put runners in scoring position in four innings, but was unable to push a run across. Barrett, Henshaw, senior center fielder Caitlin Everett, and designated player Middlebrooks all had a hit in the contest for TU.
The freshman Sill (0-1) made her collegiate debut, and struck out two batters and allowed four earned runs on seven hits in the complete-game effort.
The Boilermakers scored all five runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Second baseman Ashley Burkhardt hit a bases-loaded double to right center to score two runs in the fourth. Left fielder Erika Petruzzi singled to score a run, and catcher Danielle Fletcher singled up the middle, plating two runs.
The Golden Hurricane travels to Tallahassee, Fla., next weekend, Feb. 15-17, for the Unconquered Invitational, where it will face Florida State, Arkansas and Hofstra. TU opens the tournament against the Seminoles at 11:15 a.m. Friday.
