‘Rogers County Shootout’

No. 1 Lady Zebras take down Verdigris

VERDIGRIS — Fans from Claremore and Verdigris definitely got their monies worth Tuesday evening in the “Battle of Rogers County” at Verdigris High School.

The highly-anticipated soccer match lived up to its billing  as the Class 5A No. 1-ranked Claremore Lady Zebras won 3-2 on penalty kicks over the three-time Class 4A state champion Lady Cardinals.

After a scoreless regulation — in which Verdigris goalkeeper Jade Graves recorded 20 saves and Claremore’s keeper Brylee Brasher had eight — the outcome was decided on penalty kicks.

Taylor Beck put Verdigris ahead 1-0 when the junior midfielder pushed her shot past Brasher.

Claremore answered with Dailey Thomas tying the game at 1-1 on a shot past the out-stretched grasp of Graves.

After Summer Witt’s shot made it 2-1 in favor of Verdigris, the Lady Zebras came through once again with senior forward Cailin Caldwell driving the ball past Graves to tie the game.

Several misses later set up Claremore junior midfielder Katelin Teter with the winning kick.

Under pressure, Teter never flinched and came through like a proven veteran. The Lady Zebra midfielder rared back and pushed the ball past Graves to keep Claremore’s perfect season in tack at 5-0.
