The Claremore Zebra tennis team brought home a fourth-place finish in the Zebra Classic Tuesday afternoon, finishing with 19 overall points.
Claremore came within two points of placing in the top three behind champion Bartlesville (30), Ponca City (29) and Tahlequah (21).
Oologah also had seven points to finish eighth.
Claremore sophomore Nathan Kuykendall cruised to a third-place finish in No. 2 singles, defeating Stillwater, 6-0, 6-3 in his final match of the day.
Kuykendall advanced to the third-place match after opening with a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory over Oologah, and then falling 6-2, 6-2 to Bartlesville in the semifinals.
In No. 2 doubles, Claremore juniors Derrick Brown and Spencer Gotcher also claimed third place with a 6-1, 7-5 straight-set win over Tahlequah in their final match.
Brown and Gotcher got a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory over Sand Springs in the first round; but lost in a hard-fought semifinals match to Ponca City, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Coming out in No. 1 singles, Claremore junior Caleb Cotner regained his confidence after falling to Tahlequah in a grueling first-round match.
Cotner and his Tahlequah opponent battled neck-and-neck before the Tigers’ netter claimed 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory.
Cotner came back to beat Oologah’s Sturdivan, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 in his next match and then dropped Stillwater’s Stine in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4 to take fifth place.
In No. 1 doubles, Claremore seniors Trevor Beck and Hayden Phillips placed sixth after falling in a tough match to Ponca City’s Cloud/Wynes.
Ponca City’s duo gutted out a 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Beck/Phillips in the final match.
Beck/Phillips lost their first round match to Tahlequah, 6-0, 6-1; but rebounded with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set win over Stillwater.
