Verdigris PG O’Dell earns All-VYPE honors

Mills, Battenfield collect postseason awards

VERDIGRIS — Verdigris junior point guard Baileigh O’Dell added another piece of hardware to her impressive resume, earning first-team Small School All-VYPE magazine honors.

O’Dell picked up the Eastern Oklahoma honor after leading the Verdigris Lady Cardinals to the Class 3A state tournament for the second-straight season under head coach Mike Buntin.

Behind O’Dell’s court leadership, the Lady Cardinals reached the Elite Eight, and finished the 2012-13 season with a 24-4 overall record.

O’Dell was joined on the Small School All-VYPE first team by Kiefer’s Taylor Harris, Dewar’s Cheyenne Been, Victory Christian’s LaRanda Thomas and Cascia Hall’s Lisa Spoerl.

Claremore Sequoyah sophomore guard Blake Mills brought home first-team All-VYPE Small School honors after leading the Eagles in scoring with 18 points per game.

Mills and the Eagles wrapped up the 2012-13 boys basketball season with a 6-17 overall record and a loss to Miami in the district tournament.

Mills was joined on the first team by NOAH’s Allonzo Trier, Rogers’ Dedric Cherry, Kiefer’s Thomas Bacon and Berryhill’s Colin Beveal.

Verdigris senior forward Blake Battenfield garnered Honorable Mention recognition on the Small School All-VYPE team after guiding the Cardinals to the Class 3A state tournament.

Battenfield and the Cardinals capped off their season with a loss to Oklahoma City Centennial in the Elite Eight.

The Cardinals finished with a 23-5 overall record.

    When Claremore’s Matt Whatley takes his place behind the plate tonight in the Oklahoma Coaches Association Large School East-West All-State baseball game, the former Zebra catcher will be right at home.
    Whatley, who started four years as the catcher for the Zebras, finds his final high school baseball game taking place in his future college ballpark.
    Last November, Whatley and his long-time friend, Bryce Howe, signed NCAA Division I baseball scholarships to play for the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles.
    Tonight, those dreams come true for Whatley and Jenks outfielder Cadon Owens, who will be joining his former Bearcats teammate on the East squad. Also, Verdigris' Ryan Skalnik will start at third base for the Large East All-State team.
