The No. 7-ranked Rogers State softball team split a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader against No. 20 St. Gregory’s on Thursday night at the Diamond Sports Complex.
The long ball lifted the Hillcats past the Cavaliers in the opener as RSU used three solo home runs to tally a 3-1 victory. In the nightcap, SGU used a pair of home runs to register a 4-1 victory over the Cats. Eight of the nine runs scored in the twin bill came off home runs.
RSU dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the opening frame. Southpaw pitcher Laura Fleck helped her own cause and put the Hillcats on the board with a solo home run over the right- center field fence. Shona Guerrero doubled RSU’s lead with a first pitch home run belted over the right field fence.
Katrina Loy gave the Hillcats a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning with a leadoff home run blasted off the left field foul pole. The Cavaliers looked to start a rally in the top of the seventh as Tara Nall tallied a two-out solo home run over the left field fence. However, Fleck forced Morgan Garman to ground out to end the inning and register the win.
Fleck allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Devon Frazier (12-3) was tagged with the loss as she gave up three runs on six hits with one strikeout.
The Cavaliers took control early in the nightcap as Danielle Bacon tallied a two-out solo home run in the top of the first.
The Hillcats struggled to find a rhythm as SGU pitcher Sierra Gallego faced the minimum in the bottom of the first and the Cats left a pair of runners stranded in the second.
SGU added to its advantage in the third inning. Melanie Gladden reached base after being hit by a pitch and Whitney Anderson drew a two out walk to put runners on the corners for Caitlin O’Hagan who slapped a three-run homer over the left field fence.
Gallego faced the minimum over the next three innings to preserve the SGU lead. The Hillcats put a runner in scoring position in the sixth with a double to right field by Jamie King but the RSU offense left her stranded.
RSU attempted a seventh inning rally as Shona Guerrero led off the inning with a double to deep right field. Loy put RSU on the board with a two-out RBI single in the left-center field gap. However, the Hillcats were unable to produce the equalizer as they fell 4-1.
Fleck (24-6) was tagged with the loss. The sophomore went the distance in the circle and allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Gallego (8-2) earned the win as she allowed one run on six hits while fanning one.
