VERDIGRIS — Top-ranked Class 3A Verdigris jumped on Inola for all eight of its runs in the first inning and rolled to an 8-2 victory Monday at Cardinal Field.

Each team managed seven hits, but the Longhorns gave up eight walks and four batters were hit by pitch in propelling Verdigris to its 17th win in 19 games. The Cardinals sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and collected two hits off Inola starter Houston Weidman.

Tanner Smith scored on a wild pitch, Kale Keith ran across on a fielder’s choice and Blake Battenfeld was singled home by pitcher Riley Keizor to make it 3-1.

With one out, Peyton Battenfield and Blake Stowe earned back to back walks with the bases loaded, upping the Cardinals lead to 5-1 and chasing Weidman in favor of Seth Loyd.

The biggest blow came with the bases loaded once more when Keith cranked a double to center field off Loyd, scoring three runs for the 8-1 lead. Loyd then settled down and scattered just four moreVerdigris hits.

Inola scored a run in the top of the first and another in the fourth. Lead off batter Mason Stookey singled off Keizor, went to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third by center fielder Garrett Glass. Brandon Misner followed with a double to left, giving the Longhorns a brief 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, right fielder Zach Procter drove an infield hit and later took second on a passed ball. Loyd’s single moved Procter to third and Dillon Stringer’s single to left allowed Procter to score.

Keizer led the Cardinals with two base hits while Stookey and Stringer each had a pair of singles for the Longhorns.

Verdigris loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs before Ryan Skalnik grounded out to cut the scoring chance.
