Hayden Jones provided the spark Monday night, using one pitch to deliver a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and lead the Claremore JV Zebras Red past Collinsville, 8-0.
Jones’s blast put Claremore up 2-0, thus providing the insurance for starting pitcher Cody Tyre, who held Collinsville scoreless through five innings with seven strikeouts on four hits.
Spencer Walden opened the first with a leadoff single and later scored on Jones’ towering homer.
David Moseby also singled in the inning.
Claremore (8-4) increased the lead to 5-0 in the second on Tyre’s two-run single that scored Shawn Gordon and Nathan Hammack.
Earlier in the inning, Hammack plated Kyle Chancellor with a single between the shortstop and third baseman. Chancellor reached base on a single to center field and Gordon beat out a throwing error to first base by the Collinsville second baseman.
Gordon’s RBI-sacrifice fly to deep left-field plated Joe Clifton, who reached on a leadoff walk that put Claremore up 6-0 after three complete innings.
Claremore scored its final two runs in the top of the fifth inning on Tyre’s two-out RBI single and Jones’s RBI-fielder’s choice to shortstop.
Walden and Moseby also contributed with singles in the inning.
