‘Swept on the Road’

Skiatook takes down Claremore

SKIATOOK — Skiatook took a leg up in the Metro Lakes Conference race Tuesday night, sweeping the Claremore Zebras at the Skiatook High School Activity Center.

McKayla Schulenberger tallied 17 points as the Skiatook Lady Bulldogs trapped Claremore, 34-26 in the first game. A.J. Surritte capped off the night with a 21-point performance to lead the Bulldogs past the Zebras, 54-39.

In the girls’ game, Skiatook trailed 12-11 at halftime, but raised its defensive intensity in the final 16 minutes to hold Claremore to three field goals and 6-of-12 free throws.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run  and led 21-12 before Claremore junior guard Alex Crews came off the bench to bury a 3-pointer that got the Lady Zebras within six at 21-15.

Then, in the early stages of the fourth quarter, Crews cut Skiatook’s lead to 24-21 with her second trey of the second half.

Skiatook, meanwhile, used a 5-0 run to extend the margin to 29-21 as Eden Henderson and her sister Jessi sparked the Lady Bulldogs’ offense in the paint.

Claremore (1-1) was led in scoring by Cherokee Gott and Crews with six points each. Kaleigh Cox, who tallied 23 points in the Lady Zebras’ season-opening win at Coweta, was held to four points.

The Lady Zebras return to action at 1 p.m. today against Stillwater at the Bixby Tournament.

In the night-cap, Surritte and the Bulldogs cruised past the Zebras with a 29-point second-half effort.

After leading 25-19 at halftime, Skiatook rode the hot shooting of Surritte in the third quarter, and followed with a stellar defensive attack in the final eight minutes to seal the win.

Claremore (0-2) kept it close in the first half, as senior guard Brett Russell tallied 14 of his game-high 22 points.

Russell’s perimeter shooting — two treys — in the first quarter kept Claremore within reach of Skiatook, trailing 16-15.

Surritte powered Skiatook’s offense with 13 first-half points and received interior help from Jesse Haynes with eight points.

Haynes joined Surritte in double figures with 18 points, 10 in the second half.

Claremore’s offense featured four players scoring along with Russell. Daniel Lauer finished with seven points, while Hunter Garroutte added four. Truman Burrage, Reid Joyner  and Dylan Landers also contributed with two each.
