NSU men's basketball ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II preseason poll

TAHLEQUAH — The Northeastern State men's basketball team was slotted at No. 10 in the 2013-14 preseason rankings announced Monday by Division II Bulletin.

The RiverHawks are coming off a 2012-13 campaign where they finished 19-9 overall and competed in the NCAA Championship tournament for the first time in 10 years. The team also participated in its first season as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and finished third in the regular season with a 12-6 league mark.

Division II Bulletin has selected a preseason Top 25 every year since 1991 and is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this season. NSU was selected as the top team in the MIAA and the second-highest team in the Central Region (Minnesota State).

NSU returns three starters from last year, including All-American guard Bryton Hobbs. The senior from St. Louis, Mo., led Northeastern State in both points scored (18.3 ppg) and assists (4.9 apg) last year, while also finishing second in rebounding (4.0 rpg). He was an All-MIAA First Team selection and an NABC All-Central Region First Team honoree.

Hobbs and Dwayne Brunson from Fort Hays State were the two members from the Central Region to be named DIIB Super 16 selections.

Other starters returning for NSU are senior forward Marcus Sheppard (5.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg) and junior forward Landon DeMasters (7.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg).

The RiverHawks will open the regular season Nov. 9, and they will participate in the grand opening of the NSU Event Center with a game against Harding University at 8 p.m. Nov. 16.
