WOMEN'S SOCCER: Emporia State upsets NSU in MIAA tourney

TAHLEQUAH — The dream season that included multiple school records falling came to a screeching halt Tuesday night at DeLoache Field.

The Northeastern State women’s soccer team (15-4) had positioned itself to make a run at the first MIAA Championship for any sport at NSU, but the team could not make it out of the first round. The squad was defeated 3-0 Tuesday night against No. 7 seed Emporia State in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

“I thought we worked our tails off and we were fairly unlucky,” NSU Coach Chase Wooten said, who led his team to a school-record 15 victories this season. “After the second goal we ended up chasing the game. We put a lot of pressure on by design in the second half and had a couple of sitters which we could not put away.”

NSU outshot the visitors 27-11, and the home side also defeated these same Hornets (9-7-3) by a 2-0 margin this past Friday.

But at the end of the day, it was Emporia State that earned the victory when it mattered most.

“In the big picture of it all, if we put away all of our chances it’s a different game and we just couldn’t do it,” Wooten said. “They got a reset corner off a clear and they just put it back on frame and sure enough it went in for them to make it a 3-0 game. We still had 30 minutes to play and just couldn’t throw it in and it just wasn’t the night to be.”

Jordan Foutch put the road side on top in the 21st minute, and Mallory Walden headed home a second right before halftime on a free kick from midfield. McKenzie Koch added an insurance marker in the 61st minute to send the visitors through.

Emporia State now moves on to the semifinals of the championship to face No. 3 seed Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. Friday in Olathe, Kan.
