Sperry topples Inola, 75-68

INOLA — You just can’t beat that kind of shooting. Sperry guard Peyton Pratt proved it’s true.

The No. 7 Class 3A Pirates gave No. 7 Class 4A Inola fits from behind the three-point line and held on for a 75-68 victory in Will Rogers Conference basketball Tuesday night at the Inola Indoor Sports Arena.

Pratt made 8-of-10 three-pointers en route to 27 points and paced the Pirates to 63 percent shooting behind the arc as Sperry dealt the Longhorns their first loss in five games. Senior Travis Hall turned in an equally impressive performance for the home team with 34 points on 12-of-19 shooting and chipped in 10 rebounds.

Inola opened sluggishly, committing five turnovers in the first three minutes with the lead changing eight times in the first period. Sperry big man Casey Cole and the Longhorns’ Casey Gill waged war inside during the early going and Cole finished with 18 points, but it was Pratt who made the difference for the 5-1 Pirates.

It all hinged on the second quarter. Sperry meshed 6-of-8 triples with Pratt drilling four in the matter of 2:15, giving the Pirates a 29-18 advantage. Josh Bridgeman’s layup presented Sperry its biggest lead of the game at 31-18 with 3:39 remaining in the first half and Inola spent the remainder of the night in a fast and furious rally attempt.

Coach Clyde Barkley watched his Horns hit 54 percent from two-point territory, but Sperry shot an identical figure overall and it made a difference. Inola mustered only 3-of-14 long balls and every time the Longhorns inched closer, the Pirates seeemed to have an answer from 20 feet out.
