WRESTLING: UCO’s Basks stays perfect with Jet Invite victory

WICHITA, Kan. — Cody Dauphin pulled out a last-second win in the final match of the day to cap a perfect finals performance for Central Oklahoma and lift the injury-plagued Bronchos to a runner-up finish Sunday in the Jet Invitational.

UCO got championship efforts from 133-pounder Casy Rowell, 149-pounder Jordan Basks, 165-pounder Chris Watson and Dauphin at heavyweight, with Rowell and Watson winning in overtime. Garrett Henshaw took third 197, while 125 Ryan Brooks and 184 Kyle Buckley both placed fourth.

The No. 2-ranked Bronchos, who were without four injured starters, edged out No. 7 Ouachita Baptist by one point (84.5-83.5) for second place in the nine-team event. No. 20 Fort Hays State had nine runners-up and piled up 107.5 points to run away with the team title.

Rowell picked up his second tournament title of the season with a gritty 4-2 overtime win over OBU's Nate Rodriguez to avenge a loss in UCO's dual win over the Tigers two weeks ago.

The senior took a 2-0 lead on a takedown with nine seconds left in the first period and Rodriguez tied it up with an escape and riding time point, but Rowell got the winning takedown 35 seconds into the one-minute sudden victory period.

Basks stayed perfect (19-0) on the season and earned his fourth gold medal with a 5-1 finals victory over Fort Hays State's Noah Killip.

The second-ranked senior took a 2-0 lead on a takedown with 10 seconds left in the opening period, then added two penalty points and an escape to claim the title.

Watson needed a dramatic rally to capture his third tournament crown with an exciting 10-7 overtime triumph over FHSU's Bradley Little.

The second-ranked junior trailed 7-1 entering the third period, but got an escape and then tied it on a takedown and three-point near-fall in the final 30 seconds.

Watson barely fended off Little's takedown try in the late stages of the one-minute sudden victory period and then took his first lead of the match with a two-point near-fall in the first 30-second tiebreaker before adding an escape in the second one for the hard-earned victory that kept him unbeaten (14-0).

Dauphin ended the day with a 3-1 win over FHSU's Trey Page.
