Verdigris rolls past Berryhill in doubleheader sweep

VERDIGRIS — Third-ranked Verdigris shut down Berryhill in the second half and cruised to a 59-38 victory over the Maidens Friday night at the Jack Collins Sports Complex.

Berryhill was trailing just 26-25 at intermission after shooting 53 percent from the field. The Cardinals then put a clamp on the Maidens and Josie Hammock, limiting the visitors to 17 percent shooting in the final two periods.

Veridgris improved to 6-1 overall after finishing third in the Jerry Oquin Tournament last week at Inola.

Once again, senior guard Baileigh O’Dell led the Cardinals with 27 points, converting all 12 of her free throws and leading her team to a 17-of-20 performance at the line. Junior post player Courtney Risenhoover contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Hammock scored all 12 of her points in the first half to pace Berryhill, but O’Dell and the Cards tightened their defense to finally stymie her output. Hammock shadowed O’Dell all over the court most of the way, but never could curtail her drives to the hoop and outside shot.

Verdigris jumped to a 16-8 lead after O’Dell canned two free throws early in the second quarter. Then the Maidens fought back. Hailey Belveal sliced the Cardinals’ lead to 22-21 on a trey and Jessica Boone followed with a layup to give Berryhill its only lead of the game.

Risenhoover dropped through a turnaround jumper inside with 18 seconds left in the half, allowing the Cards to lead by one heading to the locker room. Ahead 28-27 early in the second half, Verdigris reeled off 12 straight points to break the game open.

Boys: Cards 83, Berryhill 67

Displaying a dominating shooting and rebounding performance, third-ranked Verdigris punished Berryhill 83-67.

The Cardinals placed all five starters in double figures while finally pulling away from the pesky Chiefs in the third quarter.

Guard Cade Upshaw led the way with 21 points followed by freshman Brewster Peacock with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Tyler Monroe added 15 points and 12 boards.

Coach Randy Upshaw’s club (6-1) bombed 14-of-28 three-pointers and hit 52 percent overall from the floor, also battering Berryhill on the glass 44-22. Incredibly, the Chiefs commited just one turnover, but effective ball handling could not stop the Cardinals.

Berryhill stuck close to Verdigris throughout the first half thanks to the drives of Chandler Moczygemba and his 11 points.
