Ex-RSU catcher Lance Rymel called up to Double-A

CLAREMORE — Former Rogers State catcher Lance Rymel was called up to Double-A by the Chicago Cubs organization on Sunday.

The Broken Arrow, Okla. native will head to Kodak, Tenn. to join the Tennessee Smokies, the Chicago Cubs Double-A affiliate, which competes in the Southern League. Rymel spent the 2012 season with the Boise Hawks, the Cubs’ Short Season A affiliate.

“What an appropriate time for Lance to move up as we are playing in the World Series and he was a vital part of our club last year,” Rogers State Head Baseball Coach Ron Bradley said. “I know he was excited about the opportunity to continue his career last year. To see him promoted to Double- A this quick has to be very exciting for him. It is exciting for our program to see our formers players have success at the next level.”

Rymel, who played for the Diamond Cats from 2010-2012, was the second RSU baseball player in program history to be drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 28th round last summer.

Rymel was the Hillcats everyday catcher in 2012, helping the Hillcats to their first NAIA World Series appearance where the team tallied a runner-up finish. He started in all 65 games as a senior with a .978 fielding percentage. The Broken Arrow, Okla. native posted 18 doubles, three home runs with 40 RBI and a .318 batting average.  As a junior he started in 39 games behind the plate for the Cats with a .988 fielding percentage as he committed just three errors in 251 chances. He drove in 33 runs and had nine doubles on the season.
