No. 8 Cleveland sneaks past Catoosa, 35-28

CLEVELAND — A fourth-quarter interception by Cleveland’s Derek Reeves sealed a huge 35-28 victory for the Tigers Friday night over the Catoosa Indians.

Catoosa got within a touchdown of the Tigers on a 53-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Caleb Wilsey to Bailey Meyer in the fourth quarter.

The win for Cleveland clinched a second-place berth in District 4A-3 and improved the Tigers to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in district.

Catoosa, meanwhile, dropped to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in district. The loss also snapped Catoosa’s four-game winning streak.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter as Cleveland took the 7-0 lead on Chas Stallard’s 67-yard pass to Reeves.

Catoosa countered with Hagen Harrison catching a 19-yard touchdown pass from starting quarterback Austin Potter to make it 7-7.

Cleveland increased its lead to 21-13 at halftime on back-to-back touchdown runs of 4 and 1 yard by Stallard in the second quarter.

Catoosa’s Potter fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Morgan late in the second quarter to narrow the gap to eight points.

Potter and the Indians came out after halftime and tied the game at 21-21 on Hunter Harrison’s 1-yard touchdown run.

The game see-sawed back in favor of Cleveland at 28-21 on a 4-yard touchdown run by Tyler Jones.

Jones added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Cleveland a 35-21 lead.

Down 14 points in the final 12 minutes, Catoosa had to rally without its starting quarterback (Austin) Potter, who suffered an injury.

The Cleveland defense held Catoosa’s running game to 84 yards on 31 carries.

Catoosa’s passing offense, though, produced 177 yards on 8-of-24 completions.
