OSU FB NOTEBOOK: Gadget plays provide treat for fans

STILLWATER — New offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich gave his offenses some gadget plays to mess with during the spring game — something not normally seen from programs.

The second play of scrimmage was a flea-flicker by the Orange squad which resulted in a 34-yard completion from Clint Chelf to Austin Hays — who finished with three catches for 69 yards.

But arguably the most talked about trick play came at the start of the third quarter with the White squad in possession. Both Wes Lunt and J.W. Walsh lined up in the backfield, along with fullback Kye Staley, who received a direct snap. A bad snap appeared to prevent the play from being run, as Staley looked like he was about to throw but elected to tuck it and run.

“Those guys come up with some plays for the spring game, and that was the first time I had seen that myself. They had a lot of fun with it,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “It was a great day to get out there and play some football.”

Commit for Cowboys

Gyasi Akem, a four-star outside linebacker from Broken Arrow who is listed as the 16th-best player at his position by Rivals.com, committed to the Cowboys before Saturday’s spring game. Akem took to Twitter to make the announcement official: “Just committed to OSU #GoPokes.” Akem was receiving interest from across the country, including many Big 12 teams and several teams from the SEC and Pac-12 Conference.

Spreading the ball

A lot of talk has been made this spring of taking some of the pressure off of receiver Josh Stewart, who eclipsed 100 receptions last year — finishing with three times as many catches as any other OSU receiver. If the spring game is any indication, the Cowboy quarterbacks appear to be heading the words of Yurcich and Gundy.
