The annual 4-State Baseball Festival gets under way today and Saturday at Claremore’s American Legion Park, Sequoyah High School and the Pryor High School Baseball Complex.
Teams from Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma will compete in the two-day event with action starting at noon today and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Due to Claremore’s Prom on Saturday, the Zebras will only play one game — a 7:30 p.m. showdown against Class 4A Vinita tonight at American Legion Park.
Sequoyah, meanwhile, will entertain Class 4A Sallisaw at 6 p.m. tonight, and then battle Glendale (Mo.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sequoyah HS Baseball Field.
The Pryor Tigers also will host Springdale (Ark.) HarBer today at a time to be determined.
Claremore enters the Festival with a 12-6 overall record, and led by 4-year starting catcher Matt Whatley.
The ORU signee is batting over .300 in the lead-off position, and anchors a defense that is sparked by senior shortstop T.J. Wood, junior first baseman Cameron Smith, freshman third baseman Dustin Weiesnbach, sophomore second baseman Kyle Chancellor and freshmen outfielders Jeff Oxford and Brady Brim.
On the mound, Claremore’s pitching staff has been led by crafty left-hander (Cameron) Smith, who is 5-2 on the season.
Also making a return appearance this week is four-year letterman Bryce Howe, who pitched his first game of the season in relief while recovering from a back injury.
Howe will join Whatley next season at ORU.
