Ex-Razorback catcher McCann to play in MLB Futures Games

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Former Razorback catcher James McCann will play in the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday at Citi Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and also available on MLB Network Radio XM channel 89.

McCann, currently in the Detroit Tigers organization, is just the second Razorback to be selected to play in the Futures Game, joining Jess Todd, who played in the game in 2008.

A second round draft pick by Detroit in the 2011 MLB Draft, McCann is enjoying a stellar season with the Erie Seawolves, Detroit’s double-A minor league affiliate. McCann, who was ranked as the Tigers’ No. 12 prospect by MLB.com entering the 2013 season, has played in 77 games on the season and is hitting .286 with three home runs and 37 RBI. McCann ranks second on his team in hits (81) and RBI. McCann’s performance this season also earned him a spot in the 2013 Eastern League All-Star Game, which was played on Wednesday night.

A native of Santa Barbara, Calif., McCann played three seasons for the Razorbacks, playing in 169 games, including 152 starts, and hitting .284 with 16 home runs and 83 RBI. McCann enjoyed his best season at Arkansas in 2011, hitting .306 with six homers and 38 RBI. McCann was named the SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and also was one of 13 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award.
