SAC MEN'S BB: No. 10 OBU trips up MACU, 81-70

SHAWNEE — The No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University Bison used a late first half run to create breathing room and went on to defeat the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 81-70 in a battle for sole possession of second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) in Shawnee, Okla.

The Evangels (12-7, 5-3 SAC) hung tight with the defending NAIA National Runner Up Bison in the early going, as the first eight minutes featured seven ties and four lead changes.

Reggie Davis put the Evangels in front with a three at 17-16 at the 12:00 mark of the first half, but the Bison out-scored the Evangels 13-4 over the next five minutes as a three-point play by Marques Anderson and a bucket by David Johnson made it 29-21 with 7:07 left in the first half.

After free throws by Camilo Valencia and a score from Charlie Shorter cut the deficit to four, the Bison closed the half on a 19-8 run to lead 48-33 at the break.

Yuri Hager and Shorter each scored to begin the second half to make it 48-37, but from there OBU blew the game open as a three by Chase Adams capped an 11-2 spurt that made it 59-39.

The Bison build the lead as high as 26, but the Evangels ended the game on an 17-2 run on the strength of 13 points by Shorter to create the final margin of 11 points.

Shorter finished with a game-high 27 points, while Angelo Lewis had 17 points along with a team-high seven rebounds and four steals. Davis had a team-best five assists.

Clinton Houston led four Bison in double-figures with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson and Hayden Darst each scored 14, while Adams and Anderson each added 11.

The Bison (18-4, 6-2 SAC) held the Evangels to only a 37.9 percent (22-of-58) shooting clip and also controlled the glass with a 42-27 rebounding edge.
