SHAWNEE — The Oklahoma Baptist University Lady Bison got key defensive stops when they needed them and held on to defeat the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels 63-57 in a Sooner Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) in Shawnee, Okla.  The win moves OBU into a tie for fourth in the SAC, while dropping the Lady Evangels into a tie for sixth place in the league with John Brown University.

The Lady Evangels (12-7, 3-5 SAC) trailed by as many as 10 twice in the opening half before using a 7-1 spurt to take their first lead of the game at the 10:19 mark of the second half.

It was a 45-39 deficit when a three by Sarah Martin and consecutive buckets from Erica Jones and Kelsie Dutton made it 46-45 in favor of the Lady Evangels.

After four straight points from Jalissa Council put OBU back in front, Martin and Parris Price each scored to give MACU another lead of 50-49 with 7:51 left.

Another basket by Council gave the Lady Bison (11-8, 4-4 SAC) the lead for good, but the Lady Evangels stayed close and came within one on two more occasions.

It was a 61-55 deficit when Kourtni Williams cut the lead to four with a score inside at the 2:15 mark. The Lady Evangels then had multiple opportunities to make it a one-possession game, but a turnover and four straight misses kept them from coming any closer.

Two free-throws by Janell Beacham then put it away for the Lady Bison with 15 seconds left.

Price led the Lady Evangels with 12 points and six assists, while Williams recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Jones added 11 points and her and Martin each connected on 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Council shot 10-of-11 from the field to score a game-high 21 points for the Lady Bison along with a team-best eight rebounds.  Council and Allie Brandenburg each chipped in with 13 points.
