Lady Cards take 3rd in Port City Classic

O’Dell tallies career-high 31 points, makes all-tourney team

CATOOSA — Baileigh O’Dell exploded for 25 of her career-high 31 points in the first half as the Class 3A No. 5 Verdigris Lady Cardinals whipped Cascia Hall, 76-52 in the third-place game of the Port City Classic Saturday afternoon.

After finishing with 12 points in Friday’s 42-35 semifinal loss to Class 6A No. 3 Bartlesville, O’Dell took charge and turned in her best effort of the season.

The win over Cascia Hall improved the Lady Cardinals to 16-3 overall.

O’Dell, who was named to the Port City Classic All-Tournament team, drained four three-pointers in the first half as the Lady Cardinals built a 37-35 lead at the break.

While O’Dell was the difference in the first half, the third quarter belonged to Verdigris senior guard Stacia Payne.

Payne, who also joined O’Dell on the All-Tournament team, scored 14 of her 21 points in the third quarter to run the Lady Cardinals’ lead to 59-44.

Payne buried three wide-open treys and knocked down a short-range jumper as the Lady Cardinals’ outscored Cascia Hall, 22-9 in the third quarter.

Liesl Spoerl, a 6-foot senior forward, led Cascia Hall with 18 points.

Also contributing in the scoring for the Lady Cardinals were Courtney Risenhoover and Kylie Barbee with five points each, Camry Collins and Taylor Beck with four points, Caitlyn Hanslovan with three points and Kellyn Stinnett with two points.

    The East blanked the West 3-0 in the Large School All-State Baseball Game Tuesday night at J. L. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
    Claremore catcher Matt Whatley and third baseman Ryan Skalnik of Verdigris represented Rogers County in the contest.
    Skalnik finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.  Whatley was 0-for-1 with a walk.
