Rogers County baseball teams head to state

CLAREMORE — For the second-straight year, the Claremore Zebras, Catoosa Indians and Verdigris Cardinals are representing Rogers County in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A state baseball tournaments.

In 2013, all three teams competed in the state baseball tournaments with Claremore and Verdigris reaching the finals in 5A and 3A.

Verdigris went on to win its third-straight 3A championship, while Claremore collected its second-straight runner-up finish in 5A.

Catoosa lost in the state semifinals to eventual 4A champion Berryhill.

Today, though, all three teams are back in the Oklahoma City metroplex looking to make county history with three state championships.

Claremore faces Bishop McGuinness at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the 5A state quarterfinals at Norman North High School.

Catoosa battles Bethany at 11 a.m. today in the 4A state quarterfinals at Edmond Santa Fe.

Verdigris tangles with Chandler at 1:30 p.m. today in the 3A state quarterfinals at Edmond Memorial.

The winner of the Claremore-Bishop McGuinness game will face the winner of Deer Creek-Durant at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals at OU in Norman.

The winner of the Catoosa-Bethany game will play the winner of Tuttle-Cushing in the state semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday at Edmond Santa Fe.

The winner of Verdigris-Chandler will play the winner of Vian-Spiro at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals at Edmond Memorial.

On Saturday, the Class 5A state championship game will be at Noon at OU; while the 4A finals will be at 6:30 p.m. at Bricktown Ballpark.

The Class 3A state finals will also be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Bricktown Ballpark.

    For the second-straight year, the Claremore Zebra student training staff will be represented in the Oklahoma Coaches All-State games held in Tulsa.
    Meranda Golbek and Sarah Szcinski, a pair of 2014 Claremore High School graduates, earned All-State honors for their athletic training careers and will join two other student trainers from Jenks and Stillwater High School on the East squad.

    Rogers State Head Women's Basketball Coach Bobby Cope announced the six players that make up his first recruiting class heading into the 2014-15 season.

    Jordan Evans (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Amari Jones (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Jalissa Felici (Bellevue, Nebraska), and Taylor Koelsch (Owasso, Oklahoma) all join the Hillcats as transfers while Kelsy Byrd (Ketchum, Oklahoma) and Madison Dearmin (Balko, Oklahoma) come to RSU from the high school ranks.

  • Hog Call cheer earns national distinction

    Razorback fans will be Calling the Hogs, one of the nation's most unique and distinct collegiate cheers, with added pride this fall and into the future.  The University of Arkansas is believed to be the first college or university in the nation to receive a federal trademark registration for its college cheer as a sound mark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Arkansas holds softball walk-on tryouts on Aug. 27

    University of Arkansas head coach Mike Larabee has announced a one day walk-on tryout for those interested in playing for the Razorback softball team. This will be the only tryout offered for the 2014-15 season. The tryout will take place Wednesday, August 27, at Bogle Park at 4 p.m. (CT).
