The Verdigris High School basketball teams got off to a hot start with a season-opening sweep over Metro Christian Tuesday night in Tulsa.
Sophomore point guard Baileigh O’Dell scored a game-high 24 points to lift the Class 3A No. 4 Verdigris Lady Cardinals past Metro Christian, 67-40.
The Lady Cardinals (1-0) raced out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and never looked back. O’Dell was joined in double figures by senior forward Stacia Payne with 17 points and sophomore post Courtney Risenhoover with 15.
The Lady Cardinals scored 28 points in the second quarter to lead 45-17 at halftime.
Camry Collins and Caitlyn Hanslovan rounded out the scoring with nine and two points respectively.
In the boys’ game, Verdigris forward Blake Battenfield tallied a game-high 21 points and sophomore point guard Cade Upshaw had 15 to spark the Class 3A No. 3 Cardinals past Metro Christian, 55-46.
The Cardinals (1-0) jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead and rolled to a 29-17 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Metro Christian rallied by out-scoring Verdigris, 29-26.
The Verdigris High School basketball teams return to action at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Inola High School.
