Kale Schneider’s two-run double with two outs in the top of the third inning provided the momentum for the Verdigris Junior High Cardinals in Thursday’s 9-3 win over Oologah.
Schneider, who finished 1-for-3 on the night, ripped Nate Luce’s fastball to deep right-center field to score Cole Woods and Hunter Hutchison as Verdigris built a 4-0 lead.
Verdigris tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth behind a two-run single to right field by Woods to extend its lead to 7-0. Dylan Marveggio provided a single in the fourth and Kade Keith reached base on the hit by pitch.
Then, in the top of the fifth, Marveggio’s RBI-single plated Schneider and Woods’ RBI-single to center field drove in Marveggio as Verdigris took a commanding 9-0 lead.
Oologah, however, tallied all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-fielder’s choice by Brock Martin and an RBI-double by Hunter Gibson.
Marveggio picked up the win on the mound, tossing 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
