Claremore senior guard T.J. Wood saved his best performance for his final game of his high school basketball career.
Wood tallied a team-high 17 points to lead the Zebras in a losing effort Friday night during the Class 6A Regionals against the No. 3-ranked Owasso Rams.
Owasso rode the hot-shooting of Shake Milton for a game-high 29 points and eliminated the Zebras with the 62-44 victory.
With the loss, the Zebras wrapped up their season with a 9-15 overall record. Owasso advanced to the regional finals Saturday night against Booker T. Washington.
Wood, who hadn’t played basketball since the eighth grade in Owasso, returned to Rams Country and put on a show.
The 6-foot-1 guard scored seven of Claremore’s first 11 points, including a 3-pointer that cut Owasso’s lead to 14-7 with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Another 3-pointer from Wood to open the second quarter pulled the Zebras to within six points at 20-14.
Back-to-back baskets by Chris Dominguez and Reid Joyner trimmed Owasso’s lead to 20-18 with 5:58 left in the first half.
Milton, however, took over from that point on, and finished with 16 of his 29 points in the first half as Owasso carried a 31-23 lead into halftime.
Along with Wood, Dominguez tallied eight points and Hutch Helbig added seven for the Zebras.
