OSU releases 2013 women's soccer schedule

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State released its 2013 women's soccer schedule today, a scheduled highlighted by matches against nine opponents that made the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship last season, including two who played in the College Cup.

OSU, which will open the season Aug. 23 at Tennessee-Martin, is coming off an 11-6-3 season in which it finished seventh in the Big 12 Conference with a 1-4-3 mark. Seven starters return from that squad, led by senior Kristen Kelley and junior Miriam Rhinehart.

"We are very excited about the 2013 schedule; it is one of the toughest that we have ever put together," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "Nine of the 18 teams we face competed in the NCAA Tournament last year. In Penn State, Florida State and Florida, we'll play three perennial top 10 teams, and our trip to Florida will be as tough a road trip as any team will play this year.

"We hope that playing such a challenging non-conference schedule will boost our RPI with a view towards NCAA tournament selection. It should also prepare us to compete in what looks to be a very tough Big 12 Conference this year."

Among the non-conference highlights of the Cowgirls' schedule is a road trip to Florida to take on perennial NCAA powerhouses Florida State (Sept. 6) and Florida (Sept. 8). The following weekend, OSU will host Penn State, which lost in the NCAA title game in 2012, and Washington State. Carmichael's squad will also go on the road to North Texas, who was an NCAA tourney team a year ago, and Rice.

OSU will open Big 12 play at home against West Virginia on Sept. 27 and will also host Texas Tech, Texas and Kansas, leaving conference road contests tests at Oklahoma, TCU, Baylor and Iowa State.

After being held in San Antonio for 16-straight years, the Big 12 Championship has a new home in Kansas City, Mo., in 2013, and that tourney will be Nov. 6-10.

NCAA Championship play begins with first round action Nov. 15-17 and will conclude with the College Cup Dec. 6-8 in Cary, N.C.
