Ex-Sequoyah pitcher Bailey Erwin transfers to Tulsa

TULSA — The Tulsa softball team has added three transfer student-athletes - Kaitlin Allen, Bailey Erwin and Erica Sampson - for the 2013-14 academic year, head coach John Bargfeldt announced.

Allen, an infielder who played one year at Florida State, Erwin, a pitcher who spent two years at Missouri, and Sampson, a catcher who played two seasons at Oklahoma, all hail from the Tulsa area. Erwin and Sampson have two seasons of eligibility remaining, while Allen has three years of eligibility remaining.

"We're excited to bring in Erica, Bailey and Kaitlin, who have Division I experience, to compete with our current players," Bargfeldt said. "This will give us some depth and added competition. These are all local players that are returning closer to home. All three players were contributors at programs that have winning traditions."

As a freshman at Florida State, Allen played in 31 games with 21 starts at second base. The Tulsa native scored 10 runs with six RBI and a triple, and drew 19 walks, compiling a .385 on-base percentage. She earned all-state honors as a senior at Jenks High School, where she hit .396 with 25 RBI, 11 steals, two home runs and 10 doubles, leading the Trojans to a 36-5 record in her final season. She earned all-district honors as a sophomore and junior at Jenks. Allen played for the Oklahoma Diamond Girls club team.

Erwin, a native of Claremore, spent two years at Missouri, where she posted a perfect 11-0 record. As a freshman in 2012, she was 8-0 with a 1.12 ERA, two saves, 57 strikeouts against just nine walks in 74.2 innings, and allowed a .209 opponent batting average. She earned wins over Missouri State, Northern Iowa and Oklahoma State, and pitched five innings in the postseason, allowing zero runs on one hit with three strikeouts. In 2013, she was 3-0 in four appearances with 19 strikeouts and eight earned runs allowed in 24.0 innings. Erwin was a four-time Will Rogers All-Conference selection at Claremore-Sequoyah High School, was named the conference Pitcher of the Year in 2008 and 2009, and was an Oklahoma Class 4A All-State selection as a senior. She posted a career record of 103-32 with a 0.98 ERA and 796 strikeouts, tossing 57 shutouts and 14 no-hitters. Erwin played for Tulsa Shootout and Tulsa Eagles club teams.

Sampson, who is from Tahlequah, Okla., spent two years at Oklahoma, where she played in 111 games with 28 starts, helping the Sooners win the National Championship in 2013. As a sophomore in 2013, she played in 49 games and scored 19 runs, including a run in four of the Sooners' five Women's College World Series games. As a freshman, she started 27 games, recording 27 runs and four homers with 18 RBI. As a four-year letterwinner at Tahlequah High School, she hit .462 with 181 hits, 28 RBI and 130 runs. She earned Oklahoma Class 5A all-state honors as a senior in 2010 after hitting .556 with 14 home runs, 65 RBI and 39 runs scored. Sampson played for the Oklahoma Diamond Girls club team.
