BASKETBALL: Drury upends NSU women, 65-57

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s basketball team lost a road contest 65-57 to Drury Wednesday night at O’Reilly Event Center.

The RiverHawks (3-3) lost their second-straight game, while the Lady Panthers improved to 4-1 on the season.

Senior guard Tosha Tyler led Northeastern State with 17 points. Fellow senior guard Taylor Lewis added 14 on 5-of-9 shooting.

Katie Pritchard dropped 18 points and dished out six assists for the home side. Bethanie Funderburk contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

NSU shot 34 percent from the field (21-62), 30 percent from downtown (6-20) and 69 percent from the free-throw line (9-13). The Lady Panthers shot 39 percent from the field (22-57), 44 percent from behind the arc (8-18) and 68 percent from the charity stripe (13-19). Drury also outrebounded Northeastern State 48-35.

The two teams played to a 10-10 draw early in the contest, but a 10-4 run gave the home side a 20-14 advantage midway through the opening half.

Drury pushed its lead out to 34-22 with 3:36 remaining, but the RiverHawks scored the last three points of the half to take a 34-25 deficit into intermission.

NSU got within six after nailing two triples to start the second half, but the Lady Panthers held the road side at bay and pushed its lead back to double digits with a 6-0 run.

Northeastern State got to within 10 points on four separate occasions but could not get back under double digits until senior forward Sarah Green made a layup with 2:37 to play.

Lewis drained a triple with 40 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 57-53, but the RiverHawks would get no closer in the 65-57 loss.

Northeastern State has now lost two games in a row after falling 59-57 at Tarleton State on Nov. 24. The last time the squad lost back-to-back contests was the final game of the 2008-09 campaign and the first game of the 2009-10 season.

NSU will return home for just the second time this season when the team plays host to No. 20 Emporia State at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
